Change Management is key to innovation

Change & Adoption

We all know that innovation is a key driver of success. I don’t think I’ve worked anywhere over the last 25 years that didn’t have initiatives dedicated to it. From continuous improvement incentives to design thinking squads, across industries and departments, the song has remained the same:

A team spends weeks putting together a thorough process for submitting, receiving, and vetting ideas. They conduct an internal marketing campaign to raise awareness and interest.

One day, an employee comes up with a solution to a pain point that’s been dragging down their team. They identify the potential cost savings/increased efficiencies/revenue growth. They map out the new processes and teams necessary to make it work. They fill out the robust submission form.

Together, the employee and the innovation team embark on putting this great idea in place.

…

And then the idea just dies out.

The employee is disappointed and frustrated. The innovation team gets busy on something else. Everyone stops submitting ideas until they forget that there is even a program for them. A couple of years later, a team spends weeks putting together a thorough process for submitting.

Why?

No one is focused on enabling the adoption of the changes that come with an innovative idea. If an improvement has the potential to make a real impact, it’s going to require real behavior change. The adoption and engagement that comes from change management efforts is crucial to fighting the institutional lethargy of 'this is just the way things are done.'

What do we mean by change management?

It’s the art and science of guiding people through transformations in ways that make it easier (and faster) for them to adopt new processes and technologies. This, then, enables your organization to get the best return on investment in any kind of change. Bottom line? Effective change management propels transformation.

How do change efforts make such a difference?

Change management is the vital bridge between an innovative idea and its successful implementation. It ensures that employees understand, commit to, support, and adopt new ways of working. Put another way – change management makes ideas stick.

Innovations often require changes not just in processes, but also in organizational culture. Change management helps to align the organizational culture with new initiatives by communicating the benefits and positive impacts of the innovation. This is crucial to ensuring that the innovation is not just a one-off, but a sustainable enhancement.

Change management provides the planning tools and frameworks to ensure a smooth transition from the old ways of working to the new. It makes it possible to implement changes in ways that minimize disruption of day-to-day activities. Without it, putting ideas in play can be rocky, reducing the effectiveness of the innovation and willingness to implement new ones.

And finally, a key component of continuous improvement or innovation efforts is assessing their impact – understanding what was gained or saved as a result of this idea. Change management makes such evaluation possible by facilitating true adoption as well as identifying opportunities to adjust strategies (to the idea or the change process) to achieve the desired outcomes.

In the end…

Innovation is essential for growth and competitiveness, but its success largely depends on how well it is implemented. Its true value is only realized when it is fully adopted and integrated into daily operations.

Change management ensures that innovations are not just introduced, but are made to stick. It helps in smoothing the transition, encouraging adoption, aligning the organization's culture, and continuously improving strategies based on real-time feedback.

Organizations that master change management can significantly enhance their capacity to leverage new ideas and technologies, ensuring that these innovations deliver their intended benefits. Without effective change management, even the most promising innovations may falter as mere intentions rather than transformative realities.
